How Combe drives employee well-being and elevates culture through internal communications

Living up to their mission to be the most personal personal care products company, Combe transformed scattered companywide updates into a coordinated global outreach program.

The challenge: When the Combe team observed their emails were being missed and oftentimes mistaken for spam, they set out to transform their internal communications to effectively engage their global workforce — expanding across 9 countries and 3 manufacturing plants. Combe needed a solution that was:

  • Engaging: Their initial approach of using basic emails with pasted images often failed to capture attention, leading to low engagement and missed opportunities to drive their organization’s goals.
  • Centralized: With employees spread across various countries — Combe needed a unified communication strategy that ensured timely and relevant information reached all employees.
  • Inclusive: Delivering consistent, inclusive content across multiple languages and locations was crucial to fostering a strong sense of community and shared purpose worldwide.

The solution: Combe implemented Axios HQ for their all-staff communications. It marked a transformative shift in their communication strategy, significantly elevating employee engagement and enhancing their workplace culture. The HR team launched strategic newsletters using Axios HQ, including:

  • ComBE In the Know: A company-wide update that introduces new hires and shares organizational announcements to inform and engage international locations. They also have a version for their headquarters, highlighting local updates and events to foster a sense of culture and togetherness.
  • Wellness Winks: Focuses on health and wellness programs, events, and partner resources — promoting a culture of well-being.
  • Project Butterfly series: Part of Combe's digital transformation initiative, the communications provided updates, insights, and information about the project's progress and key activities.

How it works: The Combe team uses a structured approach to their comms strategy to keep employees in the loop while reinforcing company priorities.

  • At the start of the year, they map out major themes—like open enrollment and performance reviews—to make sure they address key topics when they matter most.
  • Each month, the team develops content tailored to that period’s focus, working closely with other departments to surface insights, craft engaging narratives, and design visually compelling newsletters

📊 Key comms & business results:

  • Enhanced employee engagement: Combe's newsletters consistently achieve impressive open rates averaging 83%, and glowing employee feedback.
    • According to one recipient, the communications “covered everything in one caption, which to me, is much better than receiving countless emails!!!”
  • More informed, aligned staff: The newsletters have become a key resource for employees, helping them stay informed and connected globally. By monitoring click-through rates and interactions, Combe continues to gauge engagement and refine their approach so that content remains relevant and valuable.
  • Overall employee wellness: "Wellness Winks" has led to a more engaged and healthier workforce, with employees frequently sharing personal stories of health improvements.

💭 Sarah Jeffery, HR Coordinator, closing thoughts on the impact of Axios HQ:

  • “We used to send basic emails that people dismissed as spam. Now they look forward to scheduled updates that foster a sense of community and engagement.”
  • “The platform helps translate content automatically, ensuring consistent messaging globally while building community.”
